Beach Clean June 12th 2022

As ever thanks to the intrepid warriors who turned out in a beautiful morning! The esplanade was thronging with visitors and residents, quite a few of whom decided to join us for a bit. Well done to Rachel, one of our vice-chairs, who took it upon herself to go up to the Manor Road car park to clear up the fag butts that a certain (for now unnamed) hotel’s employees are ‘donating’ to us. 936 of them! added to the roughly 600 others that were collected elsewhere and we got a haul of over 1500 of the disgusting things (the bag in the photo contains the car park ones). Thanks for sorting them out Gillian x

How do we get the message through that cigarette butts contain microplastics and enough toxins in each one to pollute 50 litres of water? And that one rainstorm and they all wash down through the gutters and straight into the sea or our river?

Other items of note – lots of fishing rope (plastic), 2 shoes (plastic), dog waste bags (guess what, plastic), 2 frames from disposable barbecues (not plastic and very sharp and hideous), a fair amount of broken glass and two full bags of non-recyclable rubbish.

next clean up is in July x
